The Battle of Corpse Lake was a battle fought between the forces of Aegor Targaryen and the forces of the Second Landing, against Prince Salassor of Pentos and the Pentoshi Forces. It was a bloody affair for both sides of the conflict, but the forces of Aegor Targaryen eventually prevailed and paved the way for Westerosi forces to finally get a foothold on Essos and continue their counter-invasion.
Prelude[]
After the disastrous First Invasion, the pressure to gain a successful foothold in Essos mounted on the young Prince of Dragonstone to deliver on the promised victory that the Crown was constantly assuring the people of Westeros. Aegor promptly began planning the Second Invasion. Unlike the First Invasion however, the Essosi were waiting for them.
As soon as they disembarked from their ships, they found that the Essosi had fortified the shoreline and and progress they tried to make was halted by a literal rain of arrows. Aegor promptly rallied his men and had them force march dozens of miles up the coast to try and avoid the fortifications.
The Long March[]
After quickly assembling his men, Aegor made a break inland for the Pentoshi Hills. A brief war council with his commanders confirmed what their only plan of survival was: they needed to outdistance the enemy and make their stand on whatever ground they could find. Mood in the army was grim as they set out at a grueling pace, but Aegor kept them calm and focused as best he could. The Targaryen prince seemed to radiate confidence. Even when some of the other commanders faltered, Aegor was always there to lead his men onwards.
Eventually, after a solid week of marching, Aegor decided where they should make their last stand. For the spot, he chose an island, only connected by five bridges. On all sides, it was surrounded by a lake the Pentoshi referred to as 'The Lake of Still Waters'. It would have another name after that day.
