Garth was Lord Paramount for three months in 353 AC, following the death of his father. He was stricken down by the disease known as Bad Belly.

In his youth, Garth was a strong boy who looked up to the legends of his grand uncle Garlan Tyrell. He spent much of his youth hunting, hawking, and taking part in tourneys around the Reach. He was described as having a thundering laugh and commanded complete admiration from his people. His skill in arms was unparalleled and he was a fine commander.
He led a large Reachman host against House Peake during The War of the Shadow.
He had bore two children with his wife, Lady Laera Pommingham, but both died sickly infants due to the mother's poor health. Soon after taking the position of Lord Paramount, he became violently ill with a disease known as bad belly, which would later kill him. His brother, Gwayne Tyrell, was named Lord Paramount of the Mander following his death.
