House Redwyne of the Arbor is one of the main noble houses sworn to Highgarden. Their seat is the Arbor, an island south of the Whispering Sound. Redwyne is a powerful house with strong ties to the Tyrells, and the Redwyne fleet provides a significant portion of the fleet of the Reach, owning 126 warships and five times as many merchant vessels.
Their blazon is a burgundy grape cluster on blue, symbolizing the famed wines of the Arbor. The motto has not been mentioned in the books. Members of the house tend to be freckled and red of hair.
History[]
The Redwynes claim descent from Gilbert of the Vines, a legendary son of Garth Greenhand. House Redwyne ruled over the Arbor as Kings of the Arbor until its king was lost at sea, allowing his cousin, King Meryn III Gardener, to make the isle part of the Kingdom of the Reach.
During the Dance of the Dragons, the Arbor declared for the greens.
Bethany Redwyne was to have married Brynden Tully, but he refused the match and she was wed to Lord Mathis Rowan instead. On the journey to Casterly Rock for the brokerage of their marriages, Prince Oberyn and Princess Elia Martell visited the Arbor.
During the War of the Usurper, Lord Paxter Redwyne joined his cousin-goodbrother, Mace Tyrell, in staying loyal to King Aerys II Targaryen. His main contribution to the war was the naval blockade of Storm's End during Mace's siege, ferrying men across Blackwater Bay and blockading Shipbreaker Bay.
During Greyjoy's Rebellion, the Redwyne fleet supported Stannis Baratheon in the Battle of Fair Isle.
Second War of Conquest[]
During the Second War of Conquest, much of the Redwyne strength at sea was recalled from fighting in the Narrow Sea to combat the threat of Euron Greyjoy and his reavers, who had taken the Shield Isles. The Redwynes played a crucial role in his defeat, breaking Euron's fleet during the Battle of Broken Sails.
Second Era[]
In order to secure use of their fleet during the War of the Waters, Aegon VI Targaryen promised his eldest daughter Rhaenys Targaryen to Abelar Redwyne.
