House Targaryen of Harrenhal is a cadet branch of House Targaryen, a noble family of Valyrian descent that escaped the Doom. They lived for centuries on the island of Dragonstone until Aegon the Conqueror and his sisters rode their dragons in their conquest of the Seven Kingdoms.
This branch of House Targaryen was established by Lord Maekar Targaryen in the year 331AC, following the extinction of House Strickland in the War of the Lords Scorned.
Their sigil is a silver dragon on a black field, likely stemming from Maekar's Stark heritage.
History[]
Maekar Targaryen was the third born son of Aegon the Revenant King, and won acclaim during the War of the Lords Scorned in the year 331AC. After the war, with Harrenhal unoccupied, both the Lothstons of Belfry Tower and the Strongs of Stronghold laid claim on their ancestral titles, the conflict seeming fit to escalate into full blow war. King Aegon VI decided that neither house should have it, passing over his new heir, Aemon, in favour of his next eldest son, Maekar, granting him the title Lord of Harrenhal, with all the lands and privileges such would provide.
Maekar was wed to lady Morganna of House Mooton, as reward for that house's efforts during the war and the years that followed. During his time as Lord of Harrenhal, Maekar would attempt to restore much of the ruined towers, enlisting the Smallfolk and much of his wealth to do so. His attempts would cause the smallfolk to resent him, ultimately leading to the rise of The Red Brotherhood who would ultimately capture and kill Maekar.
Following his death, Maegor Targaryen has been the Lord of Harrenhal.
