The Order of the Green Hand is a knightly order founded by House Gardener, the Kings of the Reach of old, whose sigil was a green hand. Many of the last members of the Order died with King Mern IX Gardener at the Field of Fire during the War of Conquest. However, the knights of House Manderly still claim membership in the Order, as the Manderlys had previously been exiled from the Reach before such time and adopted in the North by House Stark.
As the only knightly order of the North, only those both virtuous and skilled in arms are offered membership in to the order. While many Northerners have their wariness about some Southron knights, the Knights of the Order of the Green Hand are considered an exception from the rule.
Knights of the Order of the Green Hand are known to wield tridents instead of spears in to battle, and also wield ironwood shields crafted specifically from House Forrester of Ironrath. Upon the black surface of the ironwood, each shield bears the ancient insignia of House Gardener of old: A green hand, which is not merely painted on but somehow dyed and infused in to the wood itself by the craftsmen of House Forrester.
The current Lord Commander of the Order is Ser Wyndryck Manderly, brother to Lord Weiland Manderly.
